So you may need a PC Expert to help you, so where do you begin? Some people say that the best possible choice is asking for the recommendation of friends, groups you are a member of, those at church or people in your place of work.
But is that really so?
What does the normal person know about PC's? Would they recognize what was acceptable value or whether their pc maintainance guy was taking them for a ride?
You can grab a local phone book and start calling. You can also scour bulletin boards at area local businesses.
But how do you know these businesses are even kosher?
You can increase the chances of a great service by following these steps:
So what should I be looking out for?
1) Cost
Pc repair is a skilled trade, like Plumbing for example. If someone says they charge £12 per hour then you have got to question if they are skilled or are they just an amateur trying their luck? The other alternative is that it is just a imaginary number to induce you into contacting them and getting them round. When the final invoice comes it is inevitably going to be much more because they had to "replace" parts that were not even broken, or because they had to spend "20 hours" fixing it. PC maintenance is a skilled service so be prepared to pay a reasonable amount for a great service. In The Capital, expect to pay £50-100 for the first hour and then 25-50 per 1\2 hour after that. Anywhere else, £30-50 is reasonable for the first hour and 15-25 per half hour after that. Never expect to pay more than £100 unless parts have failed. If they are replacing parts, ask for the old ones!
2) Contact details
Never ever ever hire someone who doesn't have a local address and a phone number with your local dialling code. Why? because it is a sign that they are cowboys. If a business isn't based locally they will need charge more to do the job. If they have a mobile number, it's probably because they need to change it often!
3) Demeanor
If a business isn't polite to you on the phone, they won't be nice when they have to traipse round to your house! Politeness, interest and helpfulness are key indicators of how a company view their clients! Look for somebody who wants to know the problem before they come round. If they are looking for answers they may know what is wrong before the come round and can bring the right tools, software or parts. This can only save you money!
Finally trust your gut! If it seems too good to be true, it will be! If they feel dodgy, they probably are. Pc repair isn't cheap but it should never cost a fortune! Choose a company using just my 3 main points and you have a much higher chance of getting great service!
